When it comes to hardwre, once I'm interested I tend to buy as early as I can, because I don't expect the price to change soon and I figure the sooner I buy it the more time I'll have to enjoy it.
With software I used to have the same mindset, but it led to having a big backlog of unplayed games - so now my mindset is to play my backlog and buy new titles later, sometimes for less $$ than on day one.
