Hm, I hope you like games, since there's a lot to choose from! I can personally recommend the following:

Fire Emblem: Awakening - This was my GOTY 2013, though I admit that I'm a bit biased, since I'm a huge FE fan. This one plays a bit different to some of the previous games, but it really is a lot of fun. My only real gripe was that it removed some of the linearity of the previous games in order to make it more customizable, though it's up to you if that's really a gripe or not. Like I said, my GOTY.

Tales of the Abyss - This is my highest ranked game on my Daily Log, with over 170 hours clocked on it. I'd recommend if you haven't played the PS2 game, or if you just want to experience it again. From what I've heard, the load times are much improved in the 3DS version, but everything else is identical.

Kid Icarus: Uprising - I had a blast with this one, I was really surprised by how much fun it was. It's technically a successor to two games from over a decade ago, but the style is so much different, it's essentially a new IP. The story is charming, the characters are funny, and the actual gameplay is extremely addicting. The controls do take some getting used to, so that'd be my one warning. If you're right-handed, you shouldn't have a problem. The game offers a left-handed option, but I can't vouch for if the experience is the same.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf - I'd refer to Kupo's post above, he pretty much said everything I'd say. There really isn't a premise, just do chores and make friends and improve your house. It's oddly addicting though, really hard to explain why. I think this is a fun complementary game, as in something you can play alongside something else.

Pokemon X/Y - I haven't played a Pokemon since Gen 2 or 3, so I was kinda removed from the series for a while, but decided to try this one out randomly. My sister's a Poke-addict, so I thought it'd be a fun way to bond with her. I was really impressed my the breadth of the game, if nothing else. There really is a lot to do, and excluding the main story events, it's really non-linear. I have fun just training new Pokemon everytime I play, before getting back to whatever Route or Town I need to see next. The story was kinda bland, but that's sort of par for the course for the series, at least from the games I remember playing. I also did have some gripes with the difficulty though, but you can find those below.

Shin Megami Tensei IV - I wasn't sure if I should recommend this, since I took multiple breaks in the middle of playing it after getting frustrated with the difficulty, but the story was one of the best I've seen in a video game. I finally beat it last weekend (I know, it came out a while ago), and if it wasn't for my backlog, I'd already be playing my New Game+. The game features multiple endings/paths, so there's a lot of replay value. In a way, I kinda felt like it was a polar opposite to Pokemon. The difficulty was much higher, and story and characters were much more interesting, but I didn't feel exactly compelled to collect everything, or catch/fuse every demon, like I would in the other game. I suppose it depends on what's important to you. I got this game because I was hyped for the Fire Emblem / Shin Megami Tensei crossover coming out, and hadn't ever played an SMT game. I had more fun playing Fire Emblem, but this one's definitely worth checking out.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D/Star Fox 64 3D - I put these together, since I played them around the same time, and they're both enhanced remakes of N64 games. I had a lot of fun playing both, but I was also a big fan of the original N64 games. If you haven't played either of the originals, or just want the nostalgia, pick either of them up.

Mario Kart 7 - Get it if you like Mario Kart. If you haven't played Mario Kart ever, get it.

I'm also getting Bravely Default in a few weeks, and plan to get Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked when my backlog gets lighter. If that ever happens. :P

Shame Pokemon is so easy does kind of ruin the fun if you dont need to use tactics, they should do a hard mode.

I think Pokemon is a game that's really as hard as you make it. The way I played, I would always be training two new Pokemon, while keeping four of my regular team in reserve. Having a Pokemon below, or significantly below, the level of whomever you need to fight made it quite a bit more challenging, and I'd say required me to use tactics to a significant degree.

If you use the same team the entire game though, then yeah, the main game will be a breeze. I know it's sort of silly to say you need to play a certain way in order to get the experience you want, but I think this argument applies to a lot of RPGs that allow grinding. If you want an easy game, keep several levels ahead of your enemies, if you don't....stay below them.

The meta-game is pretty deep and challenging though, if you're willing to get that into it.
