Depends on how good they make the spin off/ tie in. If they made a future FF tie in that went through certain events that are only vaguely described in the main game, I would definitely buy both.

You would by both, but not JUST the tie-in.  You would buy the original first of course. Most consumers will only buy one, and very very few would buy a second system for it.  I think it's a better use of resources to just port the original title to the system than design a whole new game.
