I'm waiting to reserve judgement until I've played more, but I'm sort of feeling the same way so far. I didn't like the direction they went with the game, but I really enjoyed Super Mario 3D Land, so I thought I would enjoy it at least as much as that. But I've only picked it up a few times and have never done so under any particularly great desire. I mostly just pick it up with friends so we can get that goofy multiplayer experience. It never really calls to me like a great game tends to.
But I guess I really just need to plow through it before I can make my final decision. I've heard of plenty of other people feeling a bit underwhelmed until they actually beat the thing.
