It's all about investment and return, right? In all honesty though: Nintendo's software output on the home console front has been somewhat lackluster recently. They simply underestimated the resources needed to make HD games. I think that's the reason why so many IP's are dormant currently: You can't work on a game for 3 years and only sell 1 million copies. They have to concentrate on the big ones. It's pretty sad.
