Some analyst believe that to compete Windows will eventually be given to the manufacturers for free. As it stands they are now supplying Lenovo with the software for a ridiculous low price with others to follow. This will obviously eat into their revenue.
Google on the other hand is not standing still with Chromebooks going from nothing in 2012 to 21% of all laptops sold in the US in 2013. I don't believe the essence of the chromebook will allow it to follow the path of the netbook. MS is worried enough about this to start a silly, childish campaign against it.
But for the here and now Windows will do fine.
