Rust made in a month about 40% of what Garry's Mod made in nine years

Comment

Rust doesn’t usually take hold overnight. It clings to the underside of things, invisible to those who aren’t looking for it, and spreads slowly while nobody’s looking.

That’s sort of how Facepunch expected Rust’s alpha to go - they hoped they’d built a slowburn, underground hit of Steam’s early access underside. Instead, the game hopped conspicuously to the uppermost rungs of Steam’s top seller’s list, where it remains. Facepunch were “knocked on their arses” by sales figures - and now say that Rust has dwarfed sales of the game that funded it: Garry’s Mod.

Assassin's Creed IV owes more to "comments about Far Cry 3" than Assassin's Creed III

Comment

As every employee at Abstergo Entertainment knows, you can tell great stories if only you’re willing to fudge history a little. It would be easy to weave a narrative in which Assassin’s Creed 3 saw Ubisoft Montreal recognise their own hubris, and Black Flag display their newfound humility - but the truth is that the two projects were in the works simultaneously.

In fact, Black Flag learned its strongest lessons from its more lately successful sister series - Far Cry.

Alien: Isolation squeezes '70s film sets into your monitor; screenshots demonstrate how

Simulated isolation - the hiker on the mountain, the solitary monk at prayer - photographs very nicely. But what you’ll find with actual isolation is that there’s nobody there to hold the camera. Pictures of dinner might suit Instagram, but they’ll never make the cover of the National Geographic.

It’s precisely that problem that might have stumped Creative Assembly in snapping this latest round of Alien: Isolation screenshots. But no stumpees they - they’ve filled their frames with all sorts of worthy, old-fashioned subjects: entrails, dodgy airlocks, Casio-style computers, sci-fi staple guns and - I’ll be damned - even the occasional Alien.

Telltale's The Walking Dead used in school to teach ethics, but not how to kill zombies

Comment

I can't get through an episode of Telltale's The Walking Dead without becoming a guilt-ridden mess, and an exhausted one at that, having just spent a couple of hours making agonising choice after agonising choice. It's these ethical conundrums that have led to the adventure game being used in a school in Bergen, Norway.

The class has spent two weeks playing through the game as a group and vote on decisions, using their choices as a springboard to discuss ethics in an engaging way relating to the curriculum.
