Because it worked well for over 20 years, and it could still work well into the future. Handhelds and home consoles are two different types of experiences, and I happen to like that paradigm.

I'd hesitate to say it has always worked well, but I like the paradigm too. However, that still leaves the question of why Nintendo hasn't created a lasting home console brand name like PlayStation or Xbox. NES was dropped. Wii afforded Nintendo the opportunity to start a new one, but they bungled it up so hard that they might be better dropping the Wii branding altogether.
