The more dire the situation Nintendo is in with the Wii U the more likely I think Nintendo will go with VR next gen.
Something to think about... every Nintendo console sold less than the previous with the exception of the Wii. Nintendo needs to go all out creative and innovative and uber revolutionary next gen or the trend will continue.
