I've heard worse ideas but I don't think it would work. First as has been pointed out it's essentially the Vita TV strategy which hasn't been very successful, secondly it would end up being almost no different to a 3DS successor technically and I think that formula still has far more appeal. All Nintendo would do this way is canabalise their own sales, especially because the price points would be similar

I genuinely think that Nintendo are largely limited by today's technology, not in terms of powerful CPUs and GPUs but in new and innovative control methods - motion controls are old hat, everyone already has a phone or a tablet so there's no novelty to the Gamepad and VR still isn't available properly, never mind viable at a reasonable price.

3DS sells because of little effective competition, plus it's got better games than WiiU for much less. Combine that with a reasonable price and it's a killer formula, but offering the same thing twice with 2 different platforms will get them nowhere
