I think Iwata is ahead of you by a year or so! :)

Iwata said this last year at a Q&A:
"(...)as I explained to you a short while ago [speaking about the president presentation], we are not saying that we are planning to integrate our platforms into one. What we are saying is that we would like to integrate software development methods, operating systems, and built-in software and software assets for each platform so that we can use them across different machines. This means that if we manage to integrate our platforms successfully, we may in fact be able to make more platforms. At the moment, we only have our current handheld devices and home consoles because if we tried to make more platforms, our development resources would be spread too thinly. The more we can share software across different platforms, the more development resources will be left for something else."

From this you can read that Nintendo has the aspiration for, at least, a third system - whatever it is.

This is taken from the conference today:

"We cannot continue a business without winning," Iwata said on Friday during a press conference attended by Bloomberg. "We must take a skeptical approach whether we can still simply make game players, offer them in the same way as in the past for 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen, and sell titles for a couple of thousand yen each.

"We are thinking about a new business structure," Iwata added. "Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone." - http://www.computerandvideogames.com/445870/nintendo-thinking-about-a-new-business-structure/

Remember last year when Iwata said it was too soon to change strategy (wait for Wii U`s performance over the holidays and such)? Guess the time is nigh!
