I agree to an extent but I think it was more than just an accident - Nintendo struck gold with Wii Sports but it was still a calculated thing - they knew what they were doing and luckily for them it came off. Sometimes these things work and sometimes they don't. With Wii U and Nintendo Land they misjudged things badly and it backfired on them. |
I never meant to imply that it was all luck , the product still has to deliver , but the size of the success was unexpected (just look at their historical home console sales figures) and I'm sure so was the demographic that jumped onboard , so my point was more about Nintendo not trying to capitalise on what had occured and building on what had made the Wii a success , instead it became we innovate where others follow the market and thats why where a success forgetting that since Sony entered the market this is their first home console to be the sales leader.
The trouble with following up the Wii is in many respects due to how much more succesfull it was in comparison to it's predecessors and also that part of it's success is due to casual gamers many who bought the Wii as a single use device and haven't been accustomed to moving forward when the next console arrives .
