This is the lowest price you might see this year.. Doubt they will bundle Mario Kart right off the bat unless it Is for 299. Nintendo is in this business to make money even if it means selling less volume than the competition. What good is losing money on every system for them. Right now their royalties from 3rd party games is not enough (Sony can rely more on that, so they can risk a loss on the system itself). Nintendo is not going to drop the price of the hw and give away their newest released IP for free! |
Nintendo needs to dramatically increase their install base in order for the Wii U to survive to the end of this console cycle. To that end, Nintendo will sell Wii U below cost at $249 if it becomes necessary. They did the same thing with 3DS early on, and 3DS is now a total beast and no one even talks about it's early struggles anymore.
Mario Kart 8 will sell a couple million units within a few months of it launching, that much I have no trouble imagining. At that point, Nintendo can give away Mario Kart with every Wii U sale starting in November, and Kart 8 will have long since made it's money back by then. Then releasing Smash for $60 in November, the same time you can snag a Wii U with Mario Kart 8 for $249, and that I feel like, would be an extremely attractive proposition for all the Nintendo fans waiting on the fence for something big to come to Wii U.
