Probably hiding from the attention. Whenever someone is identified as female, she gets tons of attention she wouldn't otherwise get. Some people might enjoy that but my belief is that most people don't. Basically just what d21lewis said before the Miiverse/Wii/XLB thing.
I get it, it's nice to have female members on the site and you think it's be nice to be extra nice to them, but do they really think it's nice when ten users decide to be extra nice to them all at once, just because they're female?
