Old style FF gameplay is really missed by me. Last one we had really was FFX-2. (a) I was confortable going through an FF game knowing I wouldn't have to grind as it was mostly balanced, (b) I found special ways over time to make my characters even better when at first I was just making sure they survive, 
the random encounters gave the terrifying fear that maybe just maybe a Malboro will appear and you'd have to peg it and (d) at the start of the battle your characters were clean slate and you had to pimp them out, especially if it was a boss fight. In FFXII and FFXIII most of these things were missing.
