This sounds similar to the argument that since Sony hadn't announced 3m PS4 sales they couldn't have gotten past it. All you can state is that companies will always report whatever shows them in the best light. Just because they don't report the game gross doesn't necessarily mean they didn't profit, but that they didn't profit enough to make it seem like a worthy press release. The same goes for regional breakdowns for sales. They'll focus on solely what makes them look the best, but that doesn't mean that things are on the complete opposite side of the spectrum if they don't report it.
They do this because they can, and nothing requires them to do otherwise and report anything more. If the movie industry didn't already have the standards set up that it does it would almost assuredly do the exact same thing.
