I've long thought they should establish another brand for games that don't fall into the traditional universe, anyway. Kind of the way Disney separates the Disney brand from mature titles with Miramax. An FPS game certainly does not have to be a military shooter; I love FPS but I don't play any of the military titles. There is tons of room for creativity in the genre and it would be awesome to see someone explore it. Even though CoD and Battlefield have legions of fans, the success of games like Fallout 3, Borderlands, Far Cry, and BioShock prove that it's not all about playing soldier or only about competitive multi-player. It's also easy enough to take killing other humans out of the equation. Aliens, robots, vampires, they all serve well as fodder. I think a unique art-style would work well for a new IP, the way it did for Borderlands, or a really imaginative world, like BioShock. Both methods have proven effective at gaining attention in a market-place where generic looking titles like Rage go to die. Nintendo needs some diversity if they want to attract new customers and a flag-ship FPS would not be a bad direction at all. |
