I was thinking PS3 would jump over 10k this week.

Here are some overly detailed mathematics (lol) about the console market this gen so far in Japan that I stole from GAF.

Wii comparisons: At 27 weeks, Wii is where GCN was at 115.5 weeks (November 26, 2003), where DS was at 31.9 weeks (July 9, 2005), where PS2 was at 26.1 weeks (August 27, 2000), and where PSP was at 55.3 weeks (December 27, 2005).

PS3 comparisons: At 30 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 3.5 weeks (March 22, 2000), where PSP was at 11.7 weeks (February 24, 2005), where GCN was at 15.9 weeks (December 29, 2001), and where Wii was at 4.9 weeks (December 30, 2006).

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares are 11.4 / 88.6, bringing total shares to 25.9 / 74.1. If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 188.3 weeks (January 11, 2011).

PS2 vs DS: At this week's rates, PS2 and DS meet up in 27.9 weeks (December 15, 2007) at ~20.85 million apiece.

On week 22, total hardware sales for the year have passed 7 million. Last year this happened on week 32. The year before that, week 48.

Nintendo hardware sales for the year have reached 5 million. Last year this happened on week 32. The year before that, week 51.

Microsoft hardware sales for the year have reached 100K. Last year this happened on week 47. In 2005 and 2004 it wasn't reached, while in 2003 it happened on week 52.

Some seriously interesting stuff there. Especially the MS part. Its pretty much solid proof that MS is gaining some ground in Japan and all of their efforts are showing some effect, even if small. And its just nuts how the Wii is destroying the Gamecube numbers. Gamecube did soooo bad, I wonder how long it will be before the Wii passes it. Probably will take a little over a single year. Insane.
