I think it's gonna be closer than people think.

3DS had the best possible year (price cut, new model, MH4, Pokémon...) and ended up flat YoY. It's gonna start declining from this year on.

Let's be optimistic and say:

2014: 14m
2015: 12m
2016: 9m
2017:6m
2018: 3m
2019: 1m

I think we can all agree that's a pretty optimistic outlook for the 3DS currently. That would leave total sales at 87m. PSP's life has been ridiculously long and still sold 3m in 2013, but let's say the decline is sharp from now and it only ends up selling 2.5m before it's discontinued so we can round it to 83m. I think this is a best-case scenario and it would leave the 3DS barely (4m) above PSP.

Long story short, 3DS might outsell PSP by a couple of million or end up a couple of million short, but I think it'll be close (unless the 3DS defies the typical lifespan of Nintendo HW somehow).
