It's not so much the Wii U actually being universally hated as it is everyone criticizing Nintendo's current strategy and the bipolar design of the Wii U being labelled as "haters", "Nintendo haters" or "Wii U haters".
Personally, I don't hate either but I have been vocal about Nintendo's incredibly poor marketing strategy and the makeshift design philosophy behing the Wii U. There really is quite a lot to be discussed around the Wii U's general position and identity (or rather; lack thereof) but it's almost impossible to do it without being labelled as a mere hater.

Of course, a lot of Nintendo fans would still call me a "hater", regardless.
