And the biggest affair here isn't selling 2.8 or 3.1 is more about semantic... If they just said "sold around 3M" or "sold 3M" people would accept the rounding... but when you sell less than 3M and round to "more than 3M" things get funny.
Now if the rumour is real or not is anyone guess.
