Well it seems December widened the difference at least somewhat. I assume Nintendo is using the NPD tracking months which means there is still the week ending the 4th to add to the VGC total. At the end of November the 3DS was reportedly almost at 10.5m. That would put the NPD/VGC gap at about 270-370k. If the next week has the same drop as last year that will bring the VGC total to 12 million, which means the gap is probably 400-500k now.
Granted that is a relatively small issue. The bigger thing to potentially take away from this is no mention of Wii U sales. Based on the VGC numbers we might have expected a recognition of hitting 2 million. That would suggest less than 400k in December, but this is just speculation. It's entirely possible they just didn't mention it.
