It was a mix of both the Gamecube and Wii without any real direction or focus. It kept the Wii name (and added a "U" shaking my head) and kept motion controls for multiplayer or as an option in single player. But then you saw many of the niche type titles in 2013 similar to the Gamecube like Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101 (the new Viewtiful Joe) and Windwaker HD (since millions already played the Gamecube version). Well, that didn't work, so they hurried a Wii Sports HD and are now trying to recreate a Wii like experience. I just hope they find a focus in 2014. Target families and Nintendo fans with a lower priced console than the big two, even if that means cutting the price to $250 or making the gamepad optional.
