The problem lies in how true to the roots do you stay? The original game was a platformer with very difficult enemies, especially at the beginning. So it was trying to be both at the same time, and that was hard. It was kinda like the original Metroid game (it used the same engine) but without exploration and lots more platforming.
I think a re-emergence of 2-d games is in the future. This would be a good game to do that with.
