I...actually can't really disagree with that. I mean, I loved X and XII with a fiery passion (two of my favorite games, and tied for second favorite FF title), but they weren't really FF titles. Great games, but too different from the established formula to really be "Final Fantasy" games.
IX was basically the culmination of everything, I-VIII, incorporating elements and in jokes and callbacks and references so much it's amazing the game has its own identity.
