Launch hype has nothing to do with hardcore but mainstream gamers.
You need actual hardcore games or well games at all for hardcore gamers to be hyped. (but I highly doubt real hardcore gamers care about something stupid like hyping up a game) Thats not the case with console launches. Its for mainstream gamers for people that fall for marketing and bullshots etc. The easily impressed people.
How did the COD dev say? "people that play COD are not gamers". And he is right they are mainstreamers. People that watch G.I.Joe are also not cineasts/movie buffs they are mainstreamers too.
And to answer your question. it will stop when people grow a brain.... when our society does a 180° maybe in 500 years otherwhise NEVER because we will end up in an idiocracy.
