This helps his argument though - and it's something that more people need to realize.
The Gamecube was always much, much cheaper than WiiU and didn't have the detriment of Nintendo taking an 8 month vacation from releasing new 1st party software after launch day.
WiiU had an abysmal software drought post launch - far worse than any of their consoles ever had - all while being more expensive than any of their consoles have ever been before. It's quite clear why WiiU had such a pathetic performance throughout most of 2013, and deservedly so.
However, with price drops and some of their heaviest hitters still to come, it's quite apparent that the console's worst sales are behind it despite the new 8th gen competition. WiiU's uniqueness, while unfortunately meaning it won't have a lot of the industry's games, also puts the PS4 and XB1 in direct competition with each other, since over 90% of their software offerings will be the same. This is where, I believe, that WiiU's "second system" status will pay off for Ninty as the exclusives roll out and its price remains the cheapest.
