Ok, but im pretty sure most people would be incredibly excited to be getting it on with either of the olson twins, no matter which route they took...

Cleverness doesn't prove points, roy.

Yes, the majority of people (casuals) would like either Olson (console) if given the chance. If they had to pay for it, then you might start seeing preferences pop up.

Yes, but even if they had to pay for it and had a preference of one or the other, I dont think they would start hating the other option, which is my point.  They are too simliar to hate the other option, at least when looked at objectively.  There isnt a problem with having a preference of one or the other, but when you hate one so much you want it to fail, even though it shares the majority of its characteristics with your preferance, it just feels hypocritical to me.

Which is why I said cleverness doesn't prove points. You are taking a simple example of how similar things can be different, and using it like it's a perfect metric for the industry.

The ps4 and xb1 are extremely different despite being similar, and the companies behind them are extremely different too.

The rationality for why playstation fans do not want xb one in the marketplace is for each individual to decide.

...you are the one that brought the example into the equation, I just used it.  I can see this is just going to be a circular conversation, so I will just refer to my original post about how the systems share most of their games with each other and have similar specs.  The only real differentiator is a handful of exclusives which i think works well at developing a preference, but I dont see how that turns into dislike or hate of the competing platforms.  The truth is that fans of either system probably subconciously develop hatred to further justify their own buying decisions.

However, if you dont see that then we can agree to disagree then.
