This is what I was thinking should be Nintendo's set of moves.
Redesign the controller and make the screen 4 - 5 inches, and make it sleek and not as bulky, along with dropping any useless features so it could be cheaper. You sell this along side separately so people can choose one or the other or both. At the same time, develop the whole two players using the gamepad at the same time and design some kick ass add ons to new and even old games through downloads taking advantage of that feature. This also come in addition with a new bundle with a game with the new sleeker controller and because it's cheaper, perhaps they could drop the price to 250.
This is in addition to start developing some of their games on google play. I say this for a few reasons. While a lot of the games are garbage, I'm seeing a lot of development from companies creating accessories for the google play store. Also people are already playing their games on google play, they are called emulators. Why not give people a legal option to purchase their games who don't want to pay 300 dollars for the system. A common objection is that touch controls don't work as well as a controller. and to that I say I agree. That is why you form agreements with companies like Moga, Mad catz, Nyko, and others who produce controllers so they can offer them on their store. You don't put out your best games or even your newest games, but at least some games. Nintendo could also do it in a way that they could get some advertising for their products the 3ds and Wii U...Like saying hey...if you like these just imagine what it would be like on these actual systems. Another reason for this, is that it is another revenue stream, it diversifies the company a little bit, and if the handheld market gets a nice chunk eaten out of it from mobile games let's say like a decline of about a 1/3 over the next few years, they are prepared. They've already done the leg work to be able to adapt rather than it being forced on them and being years late to the party.
And on the touch screen argument, while not all games are conducive to be played on a touch screen, but some games are. How about RPG's, strategy, puzzle games. Mario RPG, Dr. Mario, whatever else that falls under. Beef up the graphics and put some of those games out so it gives people incentive to buy it rather than just ripping em off through emulators.
Those would be my recommendations. While I think Nintendo is going to be around for a long time, I'm troubled by their lack of prospect for growth and that should be the goal of a company. How do we maximize profits along with staying relevant in this industry? If the Wii U only sells 30 - 40 million which is more or less in line with other systems such as gamecube and N64 and perhaps a 100 million for 3ds , which is down from the ds, then they are not growing their company. If that's the case, it's time to mix things up.
Just my two cents
