Don't really think it works that way man. By your definition every game has 'hype' because every game is promoted by its developer / publisher. As a launch exclusive, Sony obviously gave it some promotional space, but when even the creator of the game goes out to say that Knack is a 'second purchase' game that people buy in addition to a core title, you know it is heading to stink town. |
Eh... every game is promoted by its publisher, but there are different degrees of that. For example, Call of Duty: Ghosts had tens of millions of dollars put into its marketing campaign. Obviously it was more hyped by its publisher than a game like Inversion.
As for Knack, it had a pretty decent amount of hype. It was, I believe, the first game showed off for the PS4. Mark Cenry did a lot of interviews about it. Being in every demo unit is a sort of hype (although Sony had little choice on that one as they couldn't put Killzone on the demo units). It certainly had more hype and promotion than something like Puppeteer or Tearwaway.
At any rate, Knack's sales are decent for what it is. It's sales are along the lines of other similarly promoted launch titles like Zombi U or so, and it has a decent shot of reaching 1 million if the PS4 maintains momentum. Nothing wrong with its sales, but the comparison to Super Mario 3D World was stupid from the beginning.
