"Pokemon is not like FE."
True, but similar principles apply. In Awakening, more so than any other FE game before, simply using the units you're like is a very viable option. Also, unit weakness extend beyond weapons and elements, because some classes are statistically weak against others.
"...mainly grinded in the beginning"
Why?
"...only ones fighting every chapter."
Actually this is one of the biggest problems I have with Awakening. Not the grinding per se, but how quick the growth rates are for select characters, so that not much grinding is necessary for said character to be well ahead of the difficulty curve for most of the game.
"DKC isn't a game where you have to grind to get anywhere."
Neither is Fire Emblem, provided that you are patient and devise a good strategy.
"All you have to do then is send your strongest units forward and have them kill everything."
Your opinion is colored by the way you chose to play the game.
"It had a much better story and the main cast was better than FE's as well."
You say this, but also admit to skipping much of FE:A's character development.
