I see. Awakening's definitely more accessible that some of the earlier entries, so I'd say it was a great starting point. I played it over the course of a few months, and so I think some of your issues about the repetiveness didn't really stand out as much. The ability to grind at any point is more the exception than the rule in the series (I believe the only other entries to use it were FE8/GBA and one of the Japan-only games), though I got tired of Risen/Bonus Box maps pretty fast.
