There is a different in taste in gaming between Europe and the US. You go to an arcade here, it's full of racing games. You go to an arcade in the US, it's full of light gun shooters etc. Yes US arcades have a few racers (usually just Fast and the Furious and NASCAR etc) and EU arcades have stuff like House of the Dead. But it's a noticible difference in the popularity of them.
Therefore the presence of WipeOut, Motorstorm, Drive Club etc on a first party lineup are much more important here than they would be in the US.
Sony's first party lineup is more European focussed than Microsofts therefore they appeal more to European gamers.
