Never played the original game seriously, but I adore the 3DS sequel Uprising and think it should be the new standard for the franchise going forward.
It was funny, entertaining a blast to play despite the controls not being great and unique compared to most other Nintendo games with its emphasis on action and comedy which I believe the Nintendo stable needs more of. Honestly, the game probably could have been a massive hit on the Wii and the fact that Nintendo has yet to get either a sequel, spin off or remake on the Wii U is really disappointing as they have the foundation to turn a 4th string IP into something superb going forward.
Even without Sakurai overseeing it, the foundation he laid shouldn't be that difficult to emulate and with either one of the many Wii U control inputs the issue many had with the 3DS controls could easily be rectified.
