Actually, it took the true breaking of the drought, a price cut, and Nintendo actually advertising the thing (plus a bit of help from the holidays) to make it happen.
None of those three factors are going anywhere, now - the price isn't going back up, Nintendo isn't going to stop advertising the system, and the drought has been properly broken. Mario 3D World is just one of the games involved in breaking the drought - in Japan, for instance, Wii Party U has been a phenomenon.
