Was MS's decision to limit the launch countries this holiday to 13 a mistake?

maybe that is an overstatement. there is demand for the xbox one, its just not as strong as we thought it was or enough to cause sell outs. 

Just wait until January...I think we'll see it go the way of the Wii U (but slightly better overall sales-wise).

i don't think quite wiiU levels but if january's NPD goes really bad (and i think it could) the press will turn on MS pretty hard.   xbone is pretty much guarenteed third party support (even if it is "low" rez) but sucess creates sucess.  seeing a huge decline in january will look really bad for MS.
