Generally we use the progressive banning scale. It goes from 1,3,5,7,14,20,30,45,60, perma. Generally, we don't allow for a user to get to the 60 days before permaban discussions have started. We then take a vote on if the user should be permabanned (this generally happens around the 30-45 day ban time frame, but if a user is new, it can be a lot sooner).

If a user has gone a while without a ban, we generally show more leniency towards that user and we'll either let them off with a warning or lower the progressive ban scale for them.

There are some exceptions to every rule of course (for instance, if a user goes a long time without a ban because they left the site and come back to start trouble, we'll continue onward with previous sentencing, or if the user continues to post borderline comments then makes a major slip up.)

As for if a ban seems like it's not growing in length, sometimes it's because the user is doing something other than the initial thing they were banned for. Users can be banned for Spamming, Alt IDs, Flaming, Trolling, Sig Length or Other...which would encompass things like posting porn or links to warez.

We'll also show leniency sometimes to heated arguments where we give users 1-3 days to cool off if they are starting to get too personal with their quips.

Ah cool, thanks for the explanation.

Ah. I also apologize for using the word generally too many times in my post.

Did that help clear it up for you?

Yeah sure. Perhaps you should consider being a taaaad more strict with the days being increased though. Make people who return from a ban really be mindful and not just feel that they'll be gone for another 1-5 days.
