Just because the 50 states form a union doesnt mean that they arent individually governed.  Most of the governing in the us happens at a state level, with the federal governement being more responsible for international issues or issues that affect every state.  

Marriage, up to this point, has been the responsibility of the state government.  Something I guess the judicial branch is deciding to change.

interesting facts indeed. Here the marriage act is a fedral law. State Governments mainly deal with traffic laws and development laws and recreational laws i guess lol
