As bizarre as it may seem, the N64 and GC were the hardcore consoles0 at the time and the PS1 and PS2 the casual ones. During the N64 days the 3D games were new and many casual gamers were not jumping in the band wagon. On the other hand, PS1 was the perfect link between 2D and 3D gaming. In the PS2 era, the PS2 had way more casual titles than the gamecube and the price point was perfect so it did cater to all the casuals out there. I know lots of people that bought a Ps2 slim just for casual games at that time. So for a console to sell over 100 million, it needs those casual sells and a lot of them.
