Don't get me wrong optimising the shit out of something for a peice of hardware is cool. I love the demoscene and they do levels of optimisation that would make Naughty Dog's programmers curl up and cry in a corner. But that doesn't make the hardware any more powerful. Any more than a good driver makes their car any more powerful by the fact that he could beat a bad driver in a race. Optimisation is great from an accademic point of view, but I would still rather have hardware capable of playing games that push better tech at higher frame rates and higher resolutions with better effects even without that level of optimisation. Just the same as I wouldn't rather have a Commodor 64 than my current PC just because a demoscene group managed to push more animated sprites on screen than the hardware was thought to be capable of by hacking the CPU and forcing it to draw the sprites on intermittent scan lines on different parts of the screen.

Oh yeah I agree completely on the PC side of things, if you create a game on the PC from the ground and aren't twisting and contorting it to also run on 6 other different platforms you can create some amazing things. Even people undoing some of the warping to GTA4 with the likes of Icenhancer really do rock the worlds of the likes of Forza5's graphical abilitys.
But I just think the OP has a few points regarding the great games you get from the now laughable hardware found inside a launch day 360 system, if you so much as started a game which looked like Halo4 on a 2006 PC which set you back the same lvl of money you would either be talking about playing it in a 12x8 window or else at 1 frame every new console generation :D
