They won't mistake it... but it still devalues Zelda's image IF it's buggy and terrible.

Precisely.  Aside from the horrible CD-i debacle, Nintendo is very protective of the Zelda franchise.  I'm actually quite surprised that Ninty is even letting another company use their characters in a spin-off, but I can't imagine that a good deal of Nintendo quality control won't be present here.
