Ok, so basically it's Nintendo fans hyping up a game that they'd otherwise have zero interest in, just because it has one of their beloved characters in it.

Well, that's kind of the point of the entire game now isn't it?   To attract fans from both series that may not have an interest in either idividually?   That's usually the idea behind doing a cross over game.

No.  That was more of a Lego GTA game with some Nintendo touches thrown in once in a while.   For the grand majority of the game, it had absolutely nothing to do with Nintendo in terms of their IPs.
