PS4 targeted a much broader market. As discussed (and argued) in several other threads MS narrowed its market release to target those it felt would generate the most purchases due to previous popularity and market penetration.
The following comment is but a personal experience and has no bearing on sales........but:
I have had (2) gaming friends who whole heatedly had chose to buy PS4 in the US. They did not pre-order as I had instructed them to do, knowing PS4's/XBox Ones would be a hot item this holiday.
After playing and trying my XBox One they were very impressed. Because of the availability of the XBox One in the US in comparison to the PS4. They both went out and purchased an XBox One even though they are both die hard gamers and set on the initial decision of a PS4.
I think MS availability of the One vs PS4 is playing a larger part in sales in the US IMO than many will admit.
As previously stated this is based on my personal experience and has no real validity vice this example....😁
