I think games are already full down that path. The industry is bloated with shooters and a increasing demand for midless M-rated games with realistic graphics and loads of shooting and shooting. Aside from that, a very few racing, sports and rpg franchises survive, VERY few. Fighting games and platformers have been dissapearing, and the few that still are out are not selling well. Certain genres are practically non-existent on consoles today - puzzle, adventure, simulation, rhythm & music, strategy, aerial combat, board/table games etc.
This paradigm is going to kill the industry any day
