Monster is probably the mst straight up mature anime I have seen so far. Based on the other stuff you like give Welcome to the NHK, and maybe Ghost in the Shell and Serial Experiments Lain they touch on more serious and philosophical issues, tho they can get a little goofy at times (but less so than Code Geass).
