Numbers for Wii U are not great, but not terrible either I think. It will be interesting to see if the Wii U can make some headway against the other systems throughout the first half of next year. There are relatively few big games for either, and Nintendo could potentially will have Mario Kart, Wii Fit, DK, and potentially Smash and Bayonetta in the first half of the year.

Isn't Wii Fit U already out?

I don't see Smash releasing any time soon. It will probably be a Fall/Winter 2014 game.

Wii Fit U is available digitally, but right now it's only available to previous Wii Fit owners.  There is no balance board package, so new adopters can't check it out.  They haven't really marketed it in traditional ways either, so they (hopefully) would do some kind of marketing campaign for the physical version.

As for Smash, development began on that around the time uprising was finished.  So, around February 2012.  That means by the middle of the year, they'll have had about 2 years to work on it.  So, plenty of development time especially with Namco helping out, and the fact that it runs on an engine that looks very very similar to Brawl.

If I were Nintendo I'd be trying to have a big release every month to month and a half, with a really big one capping each quarter.  So Mario Kart Q1, Smash Q2, Zelda Q3, and hopefully some new IP they've been working on for the holiday.
