Honestly I'm not sure there's a lot that can be done for the Wii U at this point. It would need a new franchise that drives hardware sales tremendously, like Pokemon did for Game Boy or Wii Sports for Wii to give it an identity, and games take 18-24 months to develop ... Nintendo doesn't have time.

Their play now is to likely begin focusing more on a Nintendo tablet like device which can stream to the TV for 2015. By then it should be reasonable to have something 2x-3x the Vita horse power wise so perhaps they could dual develop games ... make a game for the Wii U, but now they have a handheld that it can be ported to with minimal downgrades.
