I think it's pretty much looking like Mario Kart or bust at this point. If MK can't "save" the system, then Smash Bros. sure as heck isn't, Mario Kart has wider appeal.

Agreed.  Smash is fan favorite and a great seller, but Mario Kart is on a whole different level.  Mario Kart Wii is the fourth best selling game of all time.  If Mario Kart 8 doesn't sell systems, I doubt the Wii U will even reach Gamecube levels.
