You're saying the rings didn't have a purpose? Now that's just stupid.

 

I find it hard to understand why these changes weren't in the original game. The damage has been done.

of course they had purpose, they stop you from dying in 1 hit (i would hope)

It was more once you have 20 or so rings, there was no point in getting more, because even if you had 600 (which gave you no lives), you always dropped only 20 something when hit.
