Exactly.  And in the very least why have Reggie announce it?

Because Reggie is the most "internet visible" person outside of Miyamoto from the Nintendo camp to NA gamers.

And because regardless of how anti-climatic an announcement it may have seemed, it did in fact get a lot of attention and got people talking. That's most likely what they were going for.
